HONG KONG: Cathay Pacific Airlines said yesterday that they run a "full investigation" on the spread of a number of photos allegedly showing a crew performs oral sex on the pilots in the air.

Cathay Pacific spokesman said that so far the airline of Hong Kong found that there is a possibility stewardess pictures are displayed in their cabin crew.

"The investigation is still ongoing and we have no further comments so far," he said.

India's best-known Islamic seminary has sacked its reformist leader just months after he took over for praising a Hindu nationalist politician.

Darul Uloom Deoband's vice-chancellor Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi had been criticised for praising Bharatiya Janata Party politician Narendra Modi.

Mr Modi is the chief minister of the western state of Gujarat.

He is widely blamed for doing nothing to stop the 2002 riots in which more than 1,000 Muslims were killed.

Mr Vastanvi had pledged to update the seminary's curriculum and modernise the institution when he took over in January.

His praise for Mr Modi's development policies earned him the ire of conservatives and led to protests.

"Maulana Vastanvi has been removed from the post of vice-chancellor by Majlis-e-Shoora (governing council) of the seminary," Press Trust of India quoted Maulana Abdul Qasim Nomani, the new vice-chancellor, as saying.

Mr Vastanvi said he was a victim of a conspiracy.

Correspondents say Darul Uloom Deoband is one of the most respected Islamic theological schools in the region.

Australia and Malaysia sign refugee swap agreement

Australian and Malaysian officials have signed a controversial deal intended to stem the flow of asylum seekers travelling to Australia by boat.

The deal allows Australia to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia. In return, Australia will take 4,000 refugees from Malaysia over the next four years.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it would "smash the business model of people smugglers".

But some rights groups in both counties have objected to the agreement.

Rights group Amnesty International has raised concerns that asylum seekers are routinely mistreated in Malaysia.

The group says refugees are "frequently caged in appalling conditions, exploited and caned".

Malaysia, which is home to tens of thousands of illegal migrants, is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and has not ratified the UN Convention against Torture.

But Malaysia's Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who signed the deal in Kuala Lumpur, said asylum seekers would be treated according to the UN refugee agency's international standards.

"The allegation that Malaysia is not fair toward refugees in this country is completely untrue," he said.

Ms Gillard also stressed that the asylum seekers would be treated properly.

"To ensure the welfare of the asylum seekers transferred, there will be an overseeing committee that will include members of the UNHCR [UN refugee agency]," she said.

The UNHCR, which was not a signatory to the deal, said in a statement it would prefer Australia to deal with migrants on its own territory.

Under the terms of the agreement Australia has agreed to pay all the costs of the transfers.

The extra 4,000 refugees Australia has agreed to accept are immigrants who are already in Malaysia.The issue of asylum seekers has proved highly controversial for successive Australian governments.

Last week, refugee claimants held at the Christmas Island detention staged several nights of protests to demand better conditions and treatment.

Local media also reported in recent days a mass hunger strike at a Queensland detention centre, a roof-top protest at Darwin's detention centre, and the interception of another boat carrying 47 asylum seekers off the Australian coast.

Australia currently has more than 6,000 asylum seekers in detention, originating from countries including Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

The UN has previously criticised Australia for holding all asylum seekers while their applications are assessed.

The migrants are held for months at the Christmas Island centre, about 1,500 miles (2,400km) from the Australian mainland, and in other facilities.

Malaysian news agency Bernama reports that the French Atelier des Parfums, presenting its halal non-alcoholic fragrances at the Seventh Malaysia International Halal Showcase, June 23-27, has set up a new center in the country, from where they plan to target Muslim consumers all over the world.

"We are now able to bring world-class halal perfume, created in France and manufactured in Malaysia, to all Muslims around the world at affordable prices," Mustaffa Omar, general manager of the Malaysian outpost of the company located in Sri Damansar, said.

"We are giving them modern, fresh, new trendy scents that have never been created before and are not only by far superior to the existing halal fragrances on the market but also give consumers the security to use real halal certified products."

Atelier des Parfums president and CEO, Hermann J. Portner told Bernama that he was looking to help Malaysia, the host of the leading halal product showcase, become the global center for halal cosmetics and fragrances.

However, there is a debate on the internet as to whether fragrances may contain alcohol or not in order to be considered 'halal', meaning 'lawful' in Islamic terms. Several have pointed out that in countries that are usually keen to enforce 'halal' goods - and to oppose those considered 'haram' or 'unlawful' - such as Saudi Arabia, fragrances containing alcohol are still commonly sold.

For those uncertain whether to use conventional fragrances or cosmetics: it has been widely agreed that products don't necessarily need to carry an official halal certificate in order to be 'allowed.' Anything labeled 'organic' or 'vegan' or 'natural' is fine, as long as it is free of alcohol, pork derivatives, and doesn't rely on animal testing.

KANGAR: Conclusions made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Teoh Beng Hock's death should not be questioned as this will only defeat its purpose, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said the RCI was an independent body, which had been set up with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's consent and made up of individuals with high credibility to investigate the matter openly.

“What is the purpose of setting up the RCI if its findings are questioned? There are groups which questioned it because they are unhappy with the findings.

“They have made their own conclusion and they wanted the RCI's report to reflect their thinking and demands. That is unfair
“The truth remains the truth whether it is bitter or easy for us to accept. We can't deny the truth,” he said after meeting the Perlis Barisan Nasional leaders yesterday.

The Commission had concluded that Teoh was driven to commit suicide due to intensive interrogation by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers.

The 124-page report had singled out three MACC officers.

On demands that the three officers be charged as soon as possible, Najib said investigations needed to be carried out first to determine the exact offences committed by them.

“There is a need to identify if they had violated the law or breached administrative procedures. Once this has been determined, appropriate action can be taken,” he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz had said that the Government wanted the three MACC officers charged and that an investigation paper be opened based on the report's findings.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor MACC office on the 14th floor of the same building.

The setting up of the commission was announced by Najib on Jan 26 after the Coroner's Court delivered an open verdict.

KOTA TINGGI, July 24 (Bernama) -- The government is considering replacing the 10 MiG-29 aircraft of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) with the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA).

Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the service period of the Russian-made MiG-29s had ended and they needed to be replaced.

He said his ministry was now evaluating the Eurofighter Typhoon MRCA fighter jet which cost RM3 billion each for its capabilities and specifications.

"The Eurofighter is admittedly the best fighter jet and as it is expensive, we need to evaluate in detail," he told reporters after closing an Umno membership drive organised by Tenggara Umno here Sunday.

However, he said the purchase of the aircraft would depend on the financial capability of the government, more so with the country undergoing rapid development.

The ministry was also assessing other MRCA jet fighters including the Sukhoi SU-35, FA-18 Super Hornet and JAS Gripen, he added.

Selain keluarga Teoh Beng Hock yang menolak laporan Suruhanjaya Diraja yang menyiasat kematian pembantu politik itu, sebuah kumpulan sivil dan beberapa NGO lain juga tidak yakin dengan keputusan laporan yang memutuskan bahawa Teoh membunuh diri.

Hujah mereka, kematian Teoh adalah satu pembunuhan kerana lelaki itu mati ketika di bawah tahanan SPRM .

"Secara kategori kami menolak laporan suruhanjaya yang tidak menyakinkan itu bahawa Teoh membunuh diri. Kami tekankan bahawa puncanya adalah penyiksaan oleh SPRM sama ada secara mental, fizikal, termasuk juga ugutan yang menyebabkan kematiannya,” kata kumpulan itu yang menamakan diri mereka sebagai Pergerakan Rakyat Malaysia untuk Beng Hock dalam kenyataan bersama dengan beberapa NGO lain.

"SPRM dan kerajaan mesti memikul tanggungjawab untuk keselamatan dan hak asasi semua nyawa yang di dalam tahanannya. Apa-apa yang berlaku di agensi kerajaan sehingga menyebabkan kematian boleh dianggap sebagai satu pembunuhan atau homisid,” kata mereka.

NGO lain yang terlibat alah Suaram, Youth For Change dan Dewan Perhimpunan Cina Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor.

Menurut mereka laporan setebal 124 mukasurat yang didedahkan semalam itu membuktikan bahawa Teoh belum dibebaskan pada pagi 16 Julai 2009 seperti yang didakwa oleh SPRM dan masih secara paksa dalam tahanan SPRM.
